Lake Quality Assessment Program
The PLA has had an ongoing partnership with the NH Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) for over 20 years. Volunteers for the program are trained by DES to take monthly water samples from inlets and various lake depths. Phosphorous, oxygen, ecoli etc. are measured and the clarity of the lake is determined. DES issues reports periodically. The reports track year to year water quality changes, identify areas of concern, and suggest possible proactive steps to counter any lake protection problems.

Weed Watchers
The PLA participates in the DES Weed Watchers Program, taking a proactive approach to exotic plant control. Weed infestations lead to diminished wildlife habitat, decreased recreational potential, and lowered property values. Volunteers are instructed on how to take a weed survey, what to look for, and who to contact if there is a problem. Anyone can become a Weed Watcher. The only equipment a volunteer will need is a boat, a partner or two, and a nice bright summer day!

Lake Host Program
The Lake Host Program is implemented by the NH Lakes Association and supported in part by grants from the NHDES. Trained PLA volunteers provide a courtesy boat inspection at the Pleasant Lakes public access ramp to prevent the introduction and spread of exotic aquatic plants, like variable milfoil, from lake to lake. Plant infestations in lakes and ponds are undesirable because they make recreation in and on the water dangerous and unpleasant, disrupt the ecological balance of these water bodies, reduce shoreline property values, and are difficult and expensive to control.
